Avocado trees can live for 200 to 400 years, but are prone to root rot if not cared for properly. An avo tree will produce more than 1 million flowers in the course of a single season, but most will fall to the ground without being pollinated. The avo has an unusual flower habit and exhibits a behavior known as protogenic digogamy. This is where the flowers open and function as a female, then close and function the next day as a male. All the flowers on the tree are synchronized to open together as either male or female. This reduces the likelihood of the avocado tree pollinating itself.
