Vredehoek Nursery

Since 1923

One farm,
five generations and a
century of dedication to
sustainable nursery practices.

Vredehoek Nursery

For more than 100 years, the van Deventer's have been cultivating healthy, deciduous fruit trees, vineyards and roses to provide to farmers , other tree nurseries and home orchard growers.

As part of our commitment to sustainability , we practice nursery techniques that benefit BOTH the farmer and the environment, such as:

01

The use of natural reproduction techniques (such as seed germination, cuttings, budding and grafting).

Grafting allows us to combine strong rootstocks with desired fruit cultivars to produce better yields that require less pesticides and fungicides.

02

The practice of bee-friendly farming methods (such as crop rotation and smaller monoculture areas).

The reduction of monoculture creates fewer environments which pests can thrive in, thus reducing the amount of pesticide needed. Crop rotation helps to keep the soil healthy by reducing mineral depletion (therefore requiring less fertilizer AND producing healthier plants).

03

Growing bare-root trees

Bare-root trees are grown out in a field. This enables them to produce healthier root systems that are NOT potbound. In addition, it reduces the likelihood of soil pathogens being transmitted, reduces transplant shock AND doesn't require any plastic bags for growing!

04

Specializing in the propagation of the Rosacea (Rose), Vitacea (Grape), Puminacea (Pomegramate), Laurel (Avo) and Moracea (Fig) Families

By focusing only on these species, we have gained an intimate knowledge of all the diseases and nutritional deficiencies that they can suffer from. This allows us to treat and diagnose problems early, which means that your plants' health always remains at optimal levels,  therefore requiring less fertilizers, pesticides or fungicides during their lifetime.

Did you know: The Rosacea family is one of the 6 most economically important plant families in the world and contains many fruit crops such as almonds, apples, apricots, peaches, pears, plums, prunes, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, loquats, blackberries, raspberries and quinces, as well as the flowering roses.

05

Growing Prunus rootstocks from seed.

Rootstocks grown from seeds have sturdier root systems that are more wind resistant. This is because tap roots are only formed when trees are grown directly from seed. Stronger trees are more resistant to diseases and pests, which reduces the need to spray as often.

06

Providing pollination and bee removal services.

The protection of our pollinators is important to us. Not only do we enjoy working with our bees and keeping them safe, but we also know how beneficial they are to the environment.

07

Growing trees that are suitable for our climate.

By growing trees that thrive in temperate conditions (that is, the typical climate found in most parts of South Africa), we can produce stronger, healthier plants that consume less resources.

08

Grafting trees to suit your environment.

We graft your chosen cultivars onto the rootstock that will thrive best in your orchard. By choosing the rootstock for its cold tolerance, drought resistance, ability to withstand high temperatures, dwarfing properties or soil preference, we can ensure that your trees will thrive and have fewer requirements to produce optimal yields.

Our cultivars

Please note: If we do not already have a specific cultivar, we will be happy to obtain it for you, or vaccinate it for you for next season (please try to let us know by the end  March to avoid disappointment).
